Everyone knows that radiation kills tumors. Yet traditional radiation can also cause serious side effects. What if a treatment could minimize these side effects? TheraSphere Y-90 glass microspheres do just that. This minimally invasive form of radiation targets the blood stream that normally supplies tumors. “We’ve basically taken one of cancer’s greatest strengths and used it against it,” says Peter Pattison, president of interventional oncology, peripheral interventions, at Boston Scientific, the Marlborough-based medical device company, Massachusetts, which manufactures TheraSphere.

This remarkable innovation received FDA approval for the treatment of HCC earlier this year. Today, the Boston Scientific team is studying how TheraSphere could be used to treat other types of tumors.
