Arulogun said this in a statement on Monday after a workshop on “Authentic Assessment of Bimodal Universities in Nigeria”, organized by LODLC in conjunction with sponsor, Commonwealth of Learning (CoL), Canada, held in the university. Campus.

He expressed the need for the country to put less emphasis on certification and focus more on skills acquisition and practical demonstration by students to show their understanding of what they are being taught as the only panacea. to turn the tide, claiming that was the meaning of genuine assessment.

The computer systems engineering professor said that due to the current assessment method, there were a number of university graduates with very good grades, including First Class, whose interview performance was disappointing and unable to get them the job.

He said, “Actually, the problem of our education system is mainly based on our focus on certification or certificate. We prefer people with certificates without having skills to back up that certificate.

“So the reason most graduates may not be able to fit in is that what we taught them or how we assessed them may not allow them to apply what learned and that’s why some of them are not really employable.

The principal added that the implementation of authentic assessment would make education more interesting and less frightening for students, thus eliminating malpractice in exams and outright failure of students with less ability to express their thoughts on paper.

“It’s because the students will only have to demonstrate what they know. There is no right or wrong answer! You’re not likely to fail because it’s practice-based and that’s what we need now,” he said.

Earlier in their slide presentation, the workshop facilitators, Professor Godwin Akper and Professor Charity Okonkwo gave the example of a first-class computer science graduate from a second-generation college, who didn’t know how to start an apple desktop computer. the computer.
